Today we celebrate America’s 243rd Birthday at the 39th Annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth concert LIVE from the West Lawn of the Capitol in Washington D.C…and YOU’RE INVITED! Watch live today at 8:00 p.m. as John Stamos joins PBS to host the longest-running July 4 TV tradition; culminating in a display of fireworks sure to light up D.C.’s iconic skyline.
This was my 3rd year coming to the concert rehearsals and I’ve learned a few tips and tricks along the way that will help YOU beat the heat this July 4th.
1. The performers: The star-studded line-up is sure to get you on your feet! From Carole King and the Broadway cast of “Beautiful” starring Vanessa Carlton, to 11-year-old singing sensation Angelica Hale (America’s Got Talent); the talent is endless.
There were two performances in particular that you absolutely NEED to watch out for: Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) performs her explosive anthem “This is Me”. There wasn’t a sole near that stage that wasn’t blown away by her voice and the performance…simply amazing!
The other performance may not be as well known (yet), but will be a pinnacle point in the show tonight. The concerts tribute to our mend and women in uniform includes a special performance by the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band, featuring John Stamos on the drums. MusiCorps is a music rehabilitation program out of Walter Reed, and since 2007 has helped countless wounded warriors in their recoveries. Their performance of “Chicken Fried” was humbling, inspiring and just darn good.
2. Host A Capitol Fourth watch party! Our friends over at PBS came prepared with all sorts of games, recipes and even a pre-show playlist on Spotify just to get your crew excited about all the performances to come! Whether you’re grilling out with your family or mid-PCS: be sure to take photos of your crew and post them on social media with the hashtag #July4thPBS
3. A Capitol Fourth concert is set to air LIVE from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. EST. Hundreds of thousands will attend in person and millions will be watching from the comfort of their air-conditioned homes. Not everyone can brave the heat today to attend a live fireworks display, and many will experience rain in their areas. PBS has you covered though, so check your local listings! Also, even our troops overseas and our fellow military families OCONUS will be able to watch thanks to American Forces Network!
Whether you’re looking to beat the sweltering heat or may be facing inclement weather this Independence Day, join this all-star cast on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, from the comfort of your own home and have a Happy 4th of July!!
