Operation Purple Buddy Camp is a free program focused on something absolutely priceless: one-on-one time. Military kids and their parents have the opportunity to spend an entire weekend together, participating in activities, meeting other military kids and parents, and celebrating military service.
Buddy Camp is designed for military-connected children ages 5-8 and a same gender adult. This adult can be mom or dad, a grandparent, or a guardian. Activities vary based on location, but you and your buddy can expect to go on all sorts of campsite adventures like zip-lining, archery, high ropes courses and water sports. And you’ll be participating in those activities with other parents, buddies and families just like yours. Check out our upcoming Buddy Camp in Parkton, NC and apply today!
In addition to fun activities and bonding time, Buddy Camps also offer an opportunity for parents to help their buddies understand what it is they do, why they’re gone so often and why sometimes things are different when they come home. A lot of parents that attend Buddy Camp are either soon to deploy or havejust returned from deployment. Some have been on multiple year-long deployments and have children only five years old — they’ve almost been deployed as long as their buddies have been around. Buddy Camp can help with that.
Families have the chance to talk to other parents experiencing similar challenges and share strategies, resources and contact information. This support system doesn’t have to be limited to just Buddy Camp — parents and buddies can take these new network connections home with them. Sometimes all it takes is some one-on-one time, some help and some nature.
Military parent Gabrielle Holley said of her experience at Buddy Camp, “This was an amazing opportunity for my child and me. I will cherish this time together forever. I could not be more thankful for this experience. Thank you to every member who made this possible.”
