Military Spouse Appreciation Day: Why We Really Depend on the “Dependent”

You know what today is, don’t you? If you don’t have a connection to the military, you’ll probably say it’s “FRI-YAY!” (please don’t say that), but if you’re lucky enough to know someone who fights for our freedom, you better know that today is not about them.

It’s about their better half.

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. You probably know a military spouse—whether it’s through your church, your child’s school, your work, or your next door neighbor—and they’re a pretty awesome bunch.

Most don’t wear a military uniform (but even cooler, some DO!), but their sacrifices are just as impactful as the ones made by the person they married. Some military spouses don’t want to be appreciated…and that’s okay. Others like the idea that there’s a day recognizing that being a military spouse isn’t as luxurious as lying in bed eating Bon-Bons all day. In fact, the military spouses we know are movers and shakers…

To a civilian, military life can feel like a world all its own. And believe us, it is. If you have a second, I’ll explain what the following mean: PCS, LES, NCO, LCPL, TDY, DoD, MCPON, BZ, SNAFU, OPSEC, PX, OCONUS.

Just kidding. Ain’t nobody got time for that. But ask that military spouse you know to tell you what they mean…I know they know.

Only 1% of our nation serves in the military, and if you’re lucky enough to find the better half of one of those service members, take a minute to recognize such a phenomenal person. I can guarantee that military spouse has done or experienced at least one of the following:

Pursued their career and education goals.

Made impactful changes in their communities.

Raised resilient children.

Become master BUNCO players (kidding!).

Know really cool people.

Lived in really cool places.

Mentored other spouses.

Encouraged and supported their service member.

They’ve struggled.

Loved and lost.

Today, it’s all about you, military spouses. Every other day of the year, you’re still #MoreThanASpouse, but today, we want the world to know how much we appreciate you! When a military member serves, their entire family serves, too. And your military ID might say you’re a dependent, but we know they really depend on you.

Do you know a fantastic military spouse? Leave us a comment telling us how awesome they are!
